How Jim Carrey Used the Law of Attraction to Make His Dreams Come True

Check out this commencement address, given by Jim Carrey at the Maharishi University of Management’s class of 2014, in which he shares some of his experiences and life lessons with the graduating class.

Just as he fulfilled his own desires to make his dreams true, he is now inspiring others to do so. Carrey learned at an early age how to use the Law of Attraction. Oftentimes, we’re too afraid to chase after our dreams, when all we really need do is ask the Universe. We worry too much about the how; instead, we should focus on the who, when, why, where, and what of our dreams. We leave the how to the Universe and have absolute faith that which we seek will eventually be rewarded to us.

Or, we fear what others closest to us–our friends–think. So, we keep our dreams and desires hidden away. We let the noise of their criticism and judgement control us, to have sway and power over us. As a result, we end up watching our very lives pass before us. Instead, we need to teach ourselves to trust our own hearts and to block out the noise, negativity, and nonsense of other people. Ask yourself: What do they know about making that dream come true? What do they know about starting a business? That’s why they still work for someone else! On top of that, we also need to have absolute faith that the wish, that the dream we asked the Universe for fulfillment, will one day become fulfilled.

When we think of something long enough, we soon become it. You have probably heard of the old saying, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Instead, you should flip it around and say, “I’ll see it when I believe it.” In other words, take a leap of faith!

Be Bold and Chase After Your Dreams

My father could have been a great comedian but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him. And so, he made a conservative choice: Instead he got a safe job as an accountant. And when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. And our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you canĀ  fail at what you don’t want. So you might have well take a chance on doing what you love.

Because of this, Carrey’s father supported Jim’s dreams. When Carrey was 19, he moved to Hollywood to try to strike it big. Like so many other struggling actors, Carrey languished in obscurity. He often drove up Muholland Drive in his beat-up Toyota in the evenings, where he would spend hours looking down at the Hollywood hills, just visualizing the future he wanted, the one where he makes it as a successful comedian.

He even wrote himself a check in the amount of $10 million dollar, for “acting services rendered”, and placed it in his wallet. Sadly, his father would pass before seeing his son fulfill his dreams. At his father’s funeral, Jim placed the now-badly deteriorated check into the casket. Dejected and depressed, Carrey as you now know, had the persistent and the fortitude to see his dreams come true. He would see that $10 million check several years later, when he signed on for Dumb and Dumber.

So, you might say that Carrey’s father taught us a valuable lesson, that “you can fail at what you don’t want. So you might have well take a chance on doing what you love.” Do you really want to give up your own dreams, disguised as vicariously living through other people’s dreams?

Will you continue to live your life in fear, disguised as practicality? Or, will you finally take that chance on doing what you love?
